Have you heard your Aesthetician speak to you about your skin barrier? What is it and why should I care you may be thinking to yourself.
Your skin barrier needs to be healthy and functioning properly BEFORE you can even think about addressing any of you skin concerns.
So what is it?... it is you skins natural lipid layer, a protective barrier if you will. It helps maintain your skins proper PH ( usually between 4.5 and 6) . So why are we ( us Aesthetcians) hyper focused on YOUR barrier? Because when it is stripped and your skin is compromised a number of ailments will arise. So often I see a client and the first thing they tell me about their skin is that it is "sensitive " and that they can't use anything on their skin except Cerave or Purpose, and this is what their Derm is telling them.....
Truth is your skin is stripped and is now sensitized, most likely dehydrated possibly even has congestion and maybe will breakout time to time.....
Your skin is in fact not sensitive BUT compromised, you have an unhealthy skin barrier.
So now all the products you want to use for Ageing, Pigmentation ect are not working causing even more "sensitivity" "pinkness" "irritation" because there are just too many actives and you skin isn't properly functioning at its lowest level ( the foundation).
So now what? We rebalanced your barrier, usually by adding hydration( water) back into your skin, possibly even moisture(oil).
I know, you are going to tell me how much water you drink a day, there is no way your skin is dehydrated....
First if we are seeing dehydration in your skin, chances are, every other organ in your body is experiencing the same dehydration. So when we drink our water, it is going to every organ prior to the skin and most likely not even making it to the skin. Not to mention how much you sweat, don't forget that coffee you drink, maybe a glass of wine, these all pull water out of your body.
So what do we do? We feed the skin from the outside in, using ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid, Peptides, Ceramides, ingredients to help prevent TEWL (trans epidermal loss). Once we get our barrier back on track (which can take up to 6 months at times) Then and ONLY then can we start to treat your skin concerns, Ageing, Pigmentation, Acne, you get the idea.
